Has Cardinal Burke’s Counter-Revolution Started in January?
Pope Francis followers and Italian anti-Church activists are up in arms. The reason: The State-owned Trisulti Charterhouse, 100 km south-west of Rome, was taken over by the Christian Dignitatis Humanae Institute on January 26. The Institute will pay a yearly rent of 100’000 euro. The Bergoglio-outlet FaroDiRoma.it has claimed that the project is – quote – “opposed to Pope Francis’ reform.”
Cardinal Burke New Honorary President
A second news is that Cardinal Raymond Burke took over as the Institute’s new honorary president. His predecessor was 86-year-old Cardinal Renato Martino. The Dignitatis Humanae Institute is a think-tank founded in 2008. It aims at supporting Christians in public life in the face of growing secularist intolerance. In order to achieve this, the Institute coordinates affiliated parliamentary working groups throughout the world. There are plans to start in Trisulti a formation program for young leaders.
Stephen Bannon Member of Board of Trustees
A third news is that Stephen Bannon who was already a patron of the Institute, has now become a member of the Board of Trustees. Bannon served for seven months as Donald Trump’s Chief Strategist. He is a nominal Catholic who describes himself as a “proud Christian Zionist.” Bannon was married and divorced three times which sounds more like Amoris Laetitia than like counter-revolution.
The Institute’s founder and president of the Board of Trustees is Benjamin Harnwell. He became a Catholic in 2004. Harnwell was a member of the British Conservative Party and is now based in Rome. In 2016 he was appointed as an external counsellor by Bishop Marcello Sánchez Sorondo, the Chancellor of the Pontifical Academies of Science and Social Sciences. Sánchez, an ally of Pope Francis, is not known for holding Catholic convictions. In 2014 he gave a talk at the Institute’s Annual Conference.
A Heterogenous Group of People
The Dignitatis Humanae Institute involves a heterogenous group of people. Among them are Catholics like the Cardinals Burke, Sarah, Ranjith, Zen, Brandmüller, Arinze, or the ousted former Grand Master of the Order of Malta Fra Matthew Festing. On the other side one finds the Cardinals Mamberti, Scola and Turkson who are not known for strong Catholic beliefs. The Italian philosopher Rocco Buttiglione is even listed as a patron. Buttiglione, a close friend of John Paul II and former politician, is a defender of Amoris Laetita.
